Young Climbers Program
For young adventurers ready to take their climbing journey to the next level, the Young Climbers Program is the heart of the Mountain Extreme Climbing Academy.
Designed for climbers aged 7 to 17, this structured program guides participants from their very first climb through to becoming confident, skilled, and self-reliant climbers. Whether they are complete beginners or looking to refine their abilities, each student progresses through a carefully developed pathway that encourages both personal growth and athletic development.
The program focuses on building strong technical foundations, refining climbing techniques, and developing a deep understanding of the sport. Along the way, climbers learn problem-solving skills, discipline, perseverance, and confidence qualities that extend far beyond the climbing wall.
Led by experienced and certified instructors, every session combines expert coaching with a supportive and motivating environment where young climbers are encouraged to challenge themselves, set goals, and celebrate their achievements.
At Mountain Extreme, we believe climbing is more than just a sport. It is an opportunity for young people to discover their potential, build resilience, and become part of a community that shares their passion for adventure and personal growth.
For those new to the program, trial sessions are available at our standard drop-in rate, offering the perfect opportunity to experience the academy, meet our instructors, and discover whether climbing is the next great passion in their journey.
The program is divided into three progressive levels of development: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Beginner Level
The Beginner Level is the entry point for young climbers wishing to learn the fundamentals of climbing through a tailored development scheme.
This stage focuses on developing a strong safety-first mindset alongside essential climbing skills. Students are introduced to climbing equipment, wall etiquette, movement techniques, and basic climbing principles while building confidence on the wall in a safe and encouraging environment.
The Beginner Level is specifically designed to take a young person with little or no climbing experience and develop them into a safe and capable climber who understands the core principles of the sport.
The Beginner Level consists of three achievement awards:
• New Climber Award
• Beginner Technique Award
• Beginner Technical Award
Intermediate Level
The Intermediate Level is designed for climbers who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to deepen their understanding of climbing movement, technique, and equipment.
At this stage, students develop more advanced climbing skills and begin to understand how efficient movement, body positioning, balance, and route-reading contribute to climbing performance. Climbers are encouraged to think critically about their movement choices and develop greater independence while climbing.
Students are also introduced to bouldering and greater emphasis is placed on technical knowledge, equipment management, risk awareness, and decision-making.
The Intermediate Level consists of three achievement awards:
• Technique Award.
• Technical Award.
• Knowledge Award.
Advanced Level
The Advanced Level is designed for dedicated climbers seeking to maximize their potential and develop the skills required for high-performance climbing, leadership, and long-term participation in the sport.
At this stage, climbers refine advanced movement techniques, improve strength and endurance, and develop strategic approaches to solving increasingly complex climbing challenges. Students learn to analyze routes, optimize performance, and apply advanced technical skills with confidence and precision.
The program also introduces elements of climbing leadership, personal responsibility, goal setting, training principles, and competition preparation. Climbers gain a deeper understanding of risk management, advanced equipment use, and the physical and mental aspects of climbing at a higher level.
Advanced students are encouraged to take ownership of their development, mentor younger climbers where appropriate, and become positive ambassadors for the climbing community.
Key areas of focus include:
• Advanced climbing movement and efficiency
• Lead climbing progression and advanced rope management
• Route reading and problem-solving strategies
• Strength, endurance, and performance training
• Competition preparation and mindset development
• Leadership, responsibility, and climbing ethics
• Advanced equipment knowledge and safety practices
Upon completion of the Advanced Level, climbers will possess the skills, knowledge, and confidence to climb independently within indoor climbing environments and pursue further pathways in recreational, competitive, or outdoor climbing.
Note:
Progress is recorded in the Mountain Extreme Climbing Academy Logbook, which is included as part of the membership.
Students are required to bring their own climbing shoes and harness.
